Insulin sensitivity studies can get complicated quickly, but we're here to help. See our recommendations below whether your study is for GTT, Hyperglycemic Clamp or Hyperinsulinemic-Euglycemic Clamp Studies.
In this study design, a loading dose of glucose (gtt) or insulin (itt) is followed by intermittent blood sampling. The dose is typically administered orally, and since multiple blood samples are needed, an access port is the best tool to make catheter access quick and easy.
In this study design, IV glucose is infused and adjusted to reach a steady state, followed by intermittent blood sampling to establish glucose levels. Since the rat must be tethered, and low-stress, the CannuLock™ Catheter Access Button™ is an ideal tool.
This protocol uses an IV infusion of insulin to set a baseline, as well as variable rate infusion of glucose (into the same IV line). It's also common to incorporate an additional channel for IV dosing of an experimental compound. Intermittent blood sampling determines the impact of the drug administration on the rat.
